We also do a stripped-back version of 'Sweet Disposition' by The Temper Trap. "We perform a Midlake song which literally no-one knows apart from a few hardcore fans -though if you're a Midlake fan, you're probably not the sort of person to scream out the words anyway. You perform a few covers on the setlist - is that to show a different side to you? I mean, we have to keep morale high because it's such a long tour!" We're all having so much fun with it now too. "Oh God, you can tell just by looking at my face, can't you?! I've definitely got more confident because I've been doing it longer - I think if I was still shy at this point I'd be in trouble. You've been touring for most of the year. Even the most obscure things I listen to have some sort of big moment or chorus." They've all got quite big choruses too, which is the only type of song I usually listen to. There's dancier stuff on there, but then there's 'Human' which is more Killers-esque because I went through a phase of loving the new Brandon Flowers album. It was a completely different thing for both of us, which is why I think it ended up working so well."ĭo the new songs have a similar sound to those on Lights?
We've made this emotional sort-of ballad about an old farmer who lives by himself and has no-one to love. I've loved every single one of his remixes so I decided to get in touch with him. "I absolutely loved him - he's a very clever guy. How did you find it working with a dance producer? There's another new song I made with Fred Falke called 'Home', which I love."
A couple of them are songs I love that didn't make the album because they didn't quite fit in, but songs like 'Human' and 'Animal' came about because me and Starsmith, my producer, got back together for a couple of days and had a burst of creativity because we hadn't seen each other in ages. "I wasn't quite ready to start a new album, but I'm really, really pleased with the tracks we've recorded. Were you ever tempted to go for a whole new album? There are five other new songs on the Lights re-release. The video is getting more hits online than the ad, so it seems people are discovering it virally, which is great too." It's much more Christmassy than 'Lights' anyway so I think it was the right decision. John Lewis said they wanted to use it on their ad and so we released it instead. I was planning on releasing 'Lights' as the final single from the album, but we recorded 'Your Song' and everyone got excited about it. "They approached a few artists saying they were looking for someone to really capture the whole Christmas thing. How did the John Lewis opportunity come about? Even though my song's on the John Lewis ad, it's just me and my voice and there's no tricks to it." "Yeah, I'd love that obviously! It's scary to think that it might linger around the top end of the charts for the whole of The X Factor, but it would be nice to get to number one as a sort of victory over The X Factor. Ben and I have a great musical bond, and I think the song is quite a good representation of how we work, so I'm happy it's out there."Īre you hoping for a Christmas number one now? Ben Mumford and I wanted to create something that was a bit more simple and that people would only recognise when it got to the hooky bit. "Not really, because I don't think it sounds much like the original. It's strange but brilliant obviously - an amazing end to the year."ĭoes it bother you that a cover song is now your highest-charting single? "Weird! I don't think any of us really expected it. As she readies an expanded version of her album, we caught up with the lady herself for a much-needed catch-up.Ĭongratulations on the success of 'Your Song'. Now with a number one long player and four top 40 hits to her name, she appears to be ending the year on the same high with which she started it, returning to the top five with her John Lewis-endorsed cover of 'Your Song'. Back then we dubbed her a 'One To Watch', and not to toot our own horn, but she's certainly become one of the British breakthrough stars of 2010. Quite where the time's gone we're not sure, but it was nearly a year ago that we were first introduced to Ellie Goulding.
